2008 POPS goes the summer

FALMOUTH ENTERPRISE

Perhaps the biggest highlight of Labor Day weekend came on Saturday, August 30th as the Cape Cod Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Jung Ho Pak and featuring guest vocalist Jodi Benson, performed a spectacular free concert for the community at the Barnstable County Fairgrounds. The show, of course, was the Falmouth Chamber’s 7th Annual POPS Goes the Summer, generously presented by Cape Cod Five Cents Savings Bank for the third consecutive year.

Attendance once again exceeded 10,000 people, who began gathering as early as 5 p.m. when the gates first opened. Many attendees enjoyed deli- cious catered platters from Roche Brothers, who once again submitted the winning bid for the event’s food service. Other guests filled the lawn area on blankets and beach chairs, enjoying picnic dinners while watching the show. Young and old alike were thrilled by the dazzling vocal performance of Broadway and Disney star Jodi Benson, who is perhaps best known as the voice of Ariel in The Little Mermaid.

Sam Lorusso, President of Cape Cod Aggregates and Falmouth’s Citizen of the Year in 2006, acted as the Guest Conductor. Donations made at the gates went to benefit Disabled American Veterans and the Falmouth High School Scholarship Fund. A selection of automobiles featured in Falmouth’s Dream Cruise Car Show earlier that day were also displayed at the Fair- grounds during the concert. The 20-mile scenic Dream Cruise by the Sea followed on Sunday, August 30th. Participants drove through the Village Center and along beautiful oceanfront roads, enjoying spectacular views of Martha’s Vineyard and miles of pristine beaches. Drivers stopped along the route to relax, chat with other car enthusiasts, and watch the array of other classic cars go by.

The evening concluded with a brilliant fireworks display by Atlas PyroVision of New Hampshire. Young and old alike enjoyed a spectacular conclusion to the summer of 2008 through an unforgettable Labor Day weekend filled with music, family and fun.
